St-Marys
is a city located in Elk County in northwestern Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the population was 14,502 residents. St. Marys is home to Straub Brewery and the first Benedictine Convent in the United States. The town of St. Marys was founded in 1842, but in 1992 it absorbed the surrounding township of Benzinger and incorporated as a city. Much of the surrounding area remains rural. It is one of the few places east of the Mississippi River that allows hunting of wild elk. The wild elk were introduced into the area from Yellowstone National Park around the turn of the 20th century. Today, over 700 elk roam an area of about 225 square miles. The best time for catching a glimpse of them is early morning or at dusk. Other things to do near St. Marys includes hiking and biking at Clarion River Rails to Trails, canoeing, fishing and golf. The nearby East Branch Dam offers a 1,370-acre lake that is stocked with trout, bass, walleye and perch. Fisherman's Paradise is a private lake and hatchery grounds stocked with trout and fishing is available for a small fee. Other attractions include Decker's Chapel, which is one of the smallest churches in the United States, built in 1856 and located just south of St. Marys. About an hour north of town is the Kinzua Bridge, which was one of the highest railroad trestles in the country at 301 feet. Railroad traffic is no longer allowed over the bridge due to safety concerns.

Central Pennsylvania experiences a climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are pleasant and mild, and winters are cold with snow. Snowfall is variable with some winters bringing only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer.
